Coffee Talk With Charlotte Designers Part II

Today we’re sitting down with, Summer Hogan, Simply Stylings, and talking about interior design from the DIY maven!

SimpleStylingsdraft72dpi

My passion for design and DIY has drawn me to people like Beth and Summer. While attending the fall High Point Furniture Market I took a seminar, led by Robert Leleux, Editor of Domino Magazine, on the evolving interior design industry. The panel was made up of traditional interior designers and ones that have entered the industry through their own self-taught methods and blogging.  Summer, falls into the later, with her non traditional path into design as a home design blogger and stylist who creates simple style for home and life.

new headshot2

Like Beth, I met Summer through One Room Challenge, and instantly connected with her love for coastal design and décor! Summer will be joining Beth on Saturday for Style Session Live, a way to connect more locally in Charlotte and to provide FREE design advice. You can get all the details here and catch up with Beth, designPOST interiors.

Q: How did you get into interior design?
A: Interior design has been in my DNA since I was born. My mom is an incredible decorator and my dad is a designer and builder of beautiful homes, not necessarily by trade but by passion. We’ve lived in many homes growing up (only within about a 5 mile radius mind you) and I’ve always enjoyed watching and helping my mom bring each new place to life as well as the building process.
Q: What’s your favorite design project to date?
A: My favorite project to date is a tie between my coastal deck and my modern office space. I also love one of my clients master bedroom projects that has almost come to life!
Coffee Talk with Charlotte Designer Simple Stylings || Sarah Sofia Productions
Q: What’s your worst design project or most challenging project to date?
A:  I’m currently working on my dining room and kitchen renovation and I have to say the kitchen has been the toughest challenge yet. Kitchens can be so expensive and when you’re trying to do it on a basically non-existent budget its tough. Also, I never was a math kid so I’ve had all the square foot number crunching I can handle!
Coffee Talk with Charlotte Design Simply Stylings || Sarah Sofia Productions
Coffee Talk with Charlotte Designer Simply Stylings || Sarah Sofia Productions
Q: What and or who inspires you?
A: I’m inspired by so many people and it really depends on the season I’m in but right now I can’t get enough of Pencil and Paper Co.! This dynamic duo has completely blown me away with their style. Not only are their client projects amazing but their own home as well as their fashion sense is impeccable.
Q: How can the average person design a space on a budget?
A: My key advice for the average person to create a space on a budget is patience. Find a few inspirations images that you love and break it down. Hunt for similar finds at budget décor stores such as HomeGoods or thrift stores. Figure out what you can and cannot DIY.  Don’t forget to look at Lowes and Home Depot, which have so many high-end looking options at affordable prices, for lighting, hardware, and décor.

If you only have a semi-creative mind {like Summer} you can still create simple style for your home and life.

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party Part II

Last week we shared this girly and whimsical Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party with all the party details!

The above image is one of my favorites next to this image of the food table.

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

Do you have a favorite photo from last week’s Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party Part I reveal?

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

Today, I am sharing Part II with mostly images from my girls tea party outside using décor items from the birthday girls updated bedroom such as the Audrey coral pink and gold teepee, play table and chairs, and tea set.

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia ProductionsI love how all the details came together, especially these stunning and girly sequin tulle shimmer dresses from OC Kids Closet with the colorful pop of color from the faux jeweled necklaces from Target.  Due to the unseasonable cold day the girls had to wear their favorite pink coats from Gymboree.

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

I love the detail shot of the girly tea party essentials: A coral, prink and green tea set, gold and pink tablecloth fit for a princess, and a gold glam cake stand with jewels!

I even sneaked in a shot with my princesses, who were troopers with the unseasonable cold weather!

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party Part I

I have been planning this Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party for over a year and excited to finally share all the details with you.

The décor was glam and girly with tulle tutu and bow tie invitations to set the theme of the party.

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

Tulle was used for the table décor with gold polka dots for some glam to match the pink and gold polka dot backdrop. I love the fabric and tulle wreath and garland, which adds depth with the multi pinks and golds and makes this such a girly table!

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

Bite size finger foods such as PB&J crowns and shoes, cucumber flowers, tutu cupcakes, gold sparkle donut holes, flower tea cookies, and strawberry cake were perfect for this tea party themed birthday party..

While most of the décor was girly and glam, we included Charlotte’s friends that were boys by incorporating the bow tie theme. All the guests enjoyed the delicious food, bounce house and teepee!

Party Details

Being an event planner and stylist I am always thinking about all the fun details that go into any event or party. It wouldn’t be tutu party without the perfect tutu! My girl’s always get a special dress or outfit that goes along with the theme of their party and these beautiful pink and gold sequins tutu dresses from OC Kids Closest were perfect. The girls helped me pick out their pink sequins “princess shoes” as they call them, from Cynthia Rowley and their “princess” jeweled necklaces and crowns to complete the tutu tea party outfit!

This Audrey Coral Pink and Gold teepee custom-made for Charlotte by Abigails Hands not only serves as the perfect birthday gift and décor item to update her bedroom but a fun detail and play area for the kids at the party.

Guests enjoyed tea party food made with love by Sarah Sofia Productions! The strawberry cake with fresh flowers made by Sarah Sofia Production was a fan favorite! I love the pink and gold cake topper by Kiss Me Kate Studio, which even through in confetti to decorate around the cake!

Guests were given party favors that included princess wands that light up for the girls and fun sticky hand toy for the boys.

Make sure you come back later this week for Part II with additional photos from Airana Clare from our special tea party outside!

Wordless Wednesday: 8 Party and Event Planning Tips & Tricks From the Pros

As a party, event, and wedding planning pro, Sarah Sofia Productions is dishing out party planning tips and tricks that will make your party stand out and run smoothly.

Party Planning Tips and Tricks || Sarah Sofia Productions

1. Determine your budget and get organized with a party planning check list. These two items will be the most important element to keeping you on track and looking like a pro.

Sip and See / Housewarming || Sarah Sofia Productions

2. Choose a color scheme and or theme. Whether your throwing a cocktail party, holiday party or kids birthday party the colors and theme set the tone of the party, like the colors of the Sip and See/Housewarming party.

3. Food selection and preparation. Determine if you will be hiring a caterer or making the food yourself. The menu selection will be determined by the type of party your throwing i.e. brunch, wine party, dinner party and the date i.e. time of year.  Scallops are a perfect appetizer to serve for spring and summer parties. See Surprise 50th Birthday Party for details.

Party Planning Tips and Tricks Sarah Sofia Prodcutions

Who doesn’t love Pinterest? However, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the delicious and beautiful recipes. Plan on making a few items well and buying the rest. Food bars are a hot trend, so why not take the work off your plate and set up a bake potato bar or taco bar for your guests.

Wine Tasting || Sarah Sofia Productions

4. Use fun and special occasion serving pieces. There’s no better time to use all those 3 tier food platters, china, or fun serving dishes you received as wedding gifts! Varying the height and size of your food display is one of the tricks the pros use to make the food table look beautiful, like in the photo below from a Summer Cocktail Party. Don’t have a punch bowl, cupcake stand or enough place settings? Ask a friend if you could borrow it for your party or rent them for your local party rental company.

Summer Cocktail Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

5. Décor and flower arrangements. Once you’ve decided on your color scheme and or theme, it should be woven into your party through the invitations, table linens, food, serving dishes, flower arrangements and decorations.

Party Planning Tips and Tricks || Sarah Sofia Productions

Pictured above are some of our favorite flower arrangements from Tying the Knot Bridal Shower, Easter Celebrations, Valentine’s Day Sneak Peek, and Summer Wine Tasting! Flowers don’t have to be expensive or look like you just bought them at your local grocery store. Shop farmers markets or Trader Joe’s.  Arrange flowers in various heights and colors, use fruit as your vase, and use festive elements like candy.

Queen City Gala || Sarah Sofia Productions

Don’t have tons of money for flower arrangements or decorations? Use fruit in glass containers and home décor items such as candles and lanterns to set the mood.

6. Signature Drink. No matter what party your hosting, make it stand out with a specialty drink like the Moscow Mule pictured above from the Queen City Gala: Black Tie For Charity.

7. Entertainment. Don’t have a budget for a DJ or band, then make a party mix on your IPod or download your favorite party mix on your.

8. Be a guest at your own party. As a host of any party or event your busy greeting guests and making sure things run smoothly. However, make sure you take the time to enjoy it all. If you don’t have the time to get all the party planning tasks complete or don’t want to the extra stress, hire a party or an event planner and be a guest at your own party!

Heart Shaped Shortbread Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups butter, softened
  • 1 Cup white sugar
  • 4 Cups purpose flour
  • 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pam cooking spray

In a large mixing bowl cream butter and sugar until fluffy and light. Stir in vanilla.  Add flour and mix with sugar mixture. Cover and chill for one hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray two cookie sheets and chill. Use message cookie cutters and small heart shaped cookie cutters.  Dough might be fragile so use spatula to slide onto baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let cookies cool for 10 minutes and decorate.

I sprinkled just a little pink sugar over the shortbread cookies, but they really don’t need any additional decoration.

Valentine’s Day Party Sneak Peek

I’ve been working on a few fun DIY things this January, and two of them happen to collide for my Valentine’s Day Party Sneak Peek!

Vantine's Day Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

Here’s a sneak peek at the three drawer campaign piece I painted in Sherwin Williams Youthful Coral and finished in high gloss lacquer.  I have styled it with some of my favorite party pieces for an upcoming Wine Tasting Girls Night Out Valentine’s Day party!

Valentine's Day Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

A lot of DIY is going into this party prep from items I’ve used in past events. DIY spray painted gold vintage stand I found at HomeGoods to display the sea urchin form Hobby Lobby. Easy DIY glittered Champaign bottle and added a little more sparkle to the gold tray with gold ribbon. Not to mention make shift photo booth with spray painted picture frame I used for this Coral, Robin’s Egg Blue & Elephant themed 1st Birthday Party.

Don’t have tons of party décor lying around your house to decorate for Valentine’s Day? Don’t fret, decorating can be as easy as adding some fun floral arrangements, garland, and signs.

I love using heart garland around the house, especially in the front entryway, in our family room, and in the bedrooms. It’s an inexpensive yet festive way to get in the Valentine’s Day spirit!

Valentine's Day Party Ideas || Sarah Sofia Productions

The garland in the front entryway is from Target’s collection last year and the one pictured above is from Crate & Barrel. You could easily make these yourself with felt or colored cardboard paper.

Did you catch our Valentine’s Day Inspiration Round Up post last week of fun and creative ideas from years past?
