Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party Sneak Peek

I’ve been working away on editing images from last Sunday’s adorable and whimsical Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party! You can check out all the behind the scenes party planning here.

Turning 2 Tutu and Bow Tie Tea Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

I had planned to share the party in its entirety this week, but due to the not so big snow storm that shut down Charlotte, and the crazy busy week with kids home from preschool, that didn’t happen.

However, here’s a sneak peek at some of my favorite images!

Wordless Wednesday: 8 Party and Event Planning Tips & Tricks From the Pros

As a party, event, and wedding planning pro, Sarah Sofia Productions is dishing out party planning tips and tricks that will make your party stand out and run smoothly.

Party Planning Tips and Tricks || Sarah Sofia Productions

1. Determine your budget and get organized with a party planning check list. These two items will be the most important element to keeping you on track and looking like a pro.

Sip and See / Housewarming || Sarah Sofia Productions

2. Choose a color scheme and or theme. Whether your throwing a cocktail party, holiday party or kids birthday party the colors and theme set the tone of the party, like the colors of the Sip and See/Housewarming party.

3. Food selection and preparation. Determine if you will be hiring a caterer or making the food yourself. The menu selection will be determined by the type of party your throwing i.e. brunch, wine party, dinner party and the date i.e. time of year.  Scallops are a perfect appetizer to serve for spring and summer parties. See Surprise 50th Birthday Party for details.

Party Planning Tips and Tricks Sarah Sofia Prodcutions

Who doesn’t love Pinterest? However, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the delicious and beautiful recipes. Plan on making a few items well and buying the rest. Food bars are a hot trend, so why not take the work off your plate and set up a bake potato bar or taco bar for your guests.

Wine Tasting || Sarah Sofia Productions

4. Use fun and special occasion serving pieces. There’s no better time to use all those 3 tier food platters, china, or fun serving dishes you received as wedding gifts! Varying the height and size of your food display is one of the tricks the pros use to make the food table look beautiful, like in the photo below from a Summer Cocktail Party. Don’t have a punch bowl, cupcake stand or enough place settings? Ask a friend if you could borrow it for your party or rent them for your local party rental company.

Summer Cocktail Party || Sarah Sofia Productions

5. Décor and flower arrangements. Once you’ve decided on your color scheme and or theme, it should be woven into your party through the invitations, table linens, food, serving dishes, flower arrangements and decorations.

Party Planning Tips and Tricks || Sarah Sofia Productions

Pictured above are some of our favorite flower arrangements from Tying the Knot Bridal Shower, Easter Celebrations, Valentine’s Day Sneak Peek, and Summer Wine Tasting! Flowers don’t have to be expensive or look like you just bought them at your local grocery store. Shop farmers markets or Trader Joe’s.  Arrange flowers in various heights and colors, use fruit as your vase, and use festive elements like candy.

Queen City Gala || Sarah Sofia Productions

Don’t have tons of money for flower arrangements or decorations? Use fruit in glass containers and home décor items such as candles and lanterns to set the mood.

6. Signature Drink. No matter what party your hosting, make it stand out with a specialty drink like the Moscow Mule pictured above from the Queen City Gala: Black Tie For Charity.

7. Entertainment. Don’t have a budget for a DJ or band, then make a party mix on your IPod or download your favorite party mix on your.

8. Be a guest at your own party. As a host of any party or event your busy greeting guests and making sure things run smoothly. However, make sure you take the time to enjoy it all. If you don’t have the time to get all the party planning tasks complete or don’t want to the extra stress, hire a party or an event planner and be a guest at your own party!

Chili night is another family favorite, especially come football season!

Fabulous Family Fun Chili Cookoff Make a fun night of it and have the kids help prep the chili and then after dinner make s’mores. We also like to host chili cook-offs, where you devour more than one delicious bowl of chili!

Fabulous Family Fun Chili

These are my two fabulous favorite chili recipes, the first is with ground beef, and the second is with ground turkey.

Fabulous Chili Recipe

Ingredients: Serves 6-8

  • 1 pound lean ground round beef
  • 3 sliced and diced bell peppers (green, orange & red)
  • 2 cans kidney beans
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 5 Aidells Chicken & Apple sausages sliced
  • 1 can corn
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon of red pepper or to taste
  • 1 packet McCormick’s mild or medium chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon parsley

In a large skillet cook beef, drain accesses fat and add to large pot. Sauté chicken sausage and bell peppers in skillet and add basil, oregano and parsley. Cook on medium heat for 8 minutes or until lightly brown. Remove and add to large pot. Add remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce hear and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes. Ready to serve with Frito Lays and cheddar cheese.

To make Fabulous Turkey Chili (shown in photo #1) substitute the ground beef and follow the directions.

Festival Fall Decor: Tablescape

Since Monday is the official first day of fall we are sharing some festive fall décor with you today.

Festive Fall Decor

The colors red, orange and brown usually come to mind when I think of fall décor.  However, don’t be afraid to mix it up with blue and green or even some pink and purple.  You can still be classic and elegant with being different!

Festive Fall Decor Tablescap

Use décor items that you already have but in a new way to showcases your fall tablescape. Such as this turquoise table runner over a burlap table runner.  Adding new décor items to your tablescape doesn’t have to break the budget. For example, these colorful branches of leaves we a great find at my local grocery store for under $10. Wondering what to do with all those apples you just picked? I used mine as centerpiece here.

Festive Fall Decor Tablescape

I love mixing high and low items such as my Villeroy & Boch china with Pottery Barn blue plates and my Target linen napkins.  The combination really makes the colors pop.

Fall Festive Decor Tablescape

While I am all about pumpkins, try using another vegetable like squash, which makes your tablescape unique and adds dimension with the various colors.

Festive Fall Decor Tablescape

Another easy décor item is switching out your candles.  I love how these gold and white striped candles look against the array of colors.  These candles were a hostess gift from my friend and fellow blogger Summer, Simply Stylings and they add just the right touch to this tablescape.

Happy Fall Y’all!

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Sofia The First Birthday Party

My Sofia the First started getting into Sofia the First Disney Princess right after her second birthday.  We have the book, her princess gowns and accessories, the movies and shows.  It was only fitting that I start planning her 3rd birthday after her new favorite character!

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Instead of your traditional princess party, I made it into a princess and prince party, which allowed us to include all of Sofia’s close friends.

Sofia The First Invitation

Below is the set up outside for Sofia’s Royal Guests! We set the table with Sofia The First dinnerware and fine linen and added a castle tent that resembled an outdoor scene in Sofia The First.  While the main color is purple in Sofia the First’s gown, my Sofia the First loves the color pink and I wanted to incorporate that in the event design.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

We also had a colorful bounce house castle that kept Sofia’s royal guests bouncing with joy through the party!

Sofia The First Birthday Party Sofia The First Birthday Party

It wouldn’t be a royal celebration without princess tiaras and prince crowns! We set up a arts and craft table on the deck for the kids to decorate their favorite princess tiara, prince crown, sword or shield.

Sofia The First Birthday Party 4

For Sofia’s Royal Menu we served some of her favorites such as Crown PB&J, Fairy Sushi aka turkey rolls, Prince BBQ Sliders, Fruit Wands, Sparkling Pink Lemonade, Fairy Tale Cupcakes, and Castle Cookies.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

In keeping with the pink and purple theme,  I wanted the buffet table to be whimsical and not too fancy or grown up.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

A delicate light rose floral arrangement on top of a gold and crystal stand served as our centerpiece flanked by fairy wand arrangements.  I had started to make topiary arrangements, but the fairy wand felt more whimsical and kept with our princess theme.  Purple tulle with sparkles was used for the tutu effect on the edge of the table and pink tulle draped over the white linen.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Other décor items came from Sofia’s toy collection with Sofia The First figurine dolls, Sofia the first accessories like the princess shoes pair of gloves, and magic wand. I found the festive fairy wands at Target months ago and used them as part of the display and party favors for Sofia’s royal guests.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

You can’t have enough pink! Pink garland was hung above the main food buffet and outside on the deck.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Pink pom poms were hung over the drink and appetizer station.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

From the looks of things the Fairy Tale Cupcakes were by far the favorite item!

Sofia the First 3rd Birthday Party

It was a fun party to plan and even more fun being a part of the celebration!

Surprise 50th Birthday Party

50th Surprise Party This 5oth surprise bash wasn’t your typical backyard party! Susan went all out for her husband Jim’s 5oth by surprising him with a night that everyone will remember!

Guests gathered on the tent covered deck for cocktails and horderves while waiting for Jim’s arrival.

Sarah Sofia Productions

50th Surprise Party

When Jim walked into his backyard he was overwhelmed with emotion to see 120 friends and family members gathered from all of the country underneath the tents!

Taylored Visions

Taylored Visions

The color scheme and décor was a subtle navy and burlap.  In lieu of flowers Susan, the hostess, wanted a more neutral look for her husband’s party and choose centerpieces with rocks and flameless candles with navy and straw craft ribbon.  In addition to the lights strung above the tents we added candles (flameless) around the event space and tiki torches around the pool.

50th Surprise Party

The dinner buffet was plentiful with beef tenderloin sandwiches and chicken lollipops being the favorites.

50th Surprise Party

For dessert, Susan served assorted cakes from Jim’s favorite bakery in Athens, GA.  However, the highlight was when the cigar and scotch bar opened, which are two of Jim’s favorites.

50th Surprise Party

Guests danced the night away while children played in the pool, and all enjoyed the pop up photo booth!

50th Surprise Party

The most important elements of the party for Susan were for guests to feel relaxed, enjoy themselves on the dance floor and come away loving the food.  The party did not disappoint!

Brunch with the Girls: Summer Entertaining

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

I’ve always enjoyed being a hostess and brining people together, even before I decided to become a wedding and event planner!

Brunch is one of my favorite types of events because there is so much you can do, plus who doesn’t love a little sweet with their savory and some bubbly!

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

This past weekend was no exception, as a group of professional small business owners from interior design, to events, to PR gathered at my home for brunch.  It’s an eclectic group of women, some of us friends from before, some of us fast friends from One Room Challenge, and some of us friends via social media finally meeting for the first time to discuss our businesses, blogging and everything we find fun and fabulous!

Left to Right: Beth (Dwell by DeVore), Airene (Dress My Room Interiors, Kim (Legere Creativ), Malloy (Charming in Charlotte), Summer (Simple Stylings), Sarah (Sarah Sofia Productions) and Lory (Lory Cobb Interiors).

Left to Right: Beth (Design POST Interiors), Ariene (Dress My Room Interiors, Kim (Legere Creativ), Malloy (Charming in Charlotte), Summer (Simple Stylings), Sarah (Sarah Sofia Productions) and Lory (Lory Cobb Interiors).

I’ve been dying to use more of my Oh Joy Spring Collection and brunch with girls was the perfect opportunity!

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

You know you’re in the right company when your guests notice the Oh Joy Collection and all the details of your event! Only DIY enthusiasts, interior designers, and bloggers alike would get excited and request a home tour with details on the DIY stencil in my daughter Charlotte’s room, listen to me talk about updating my daughter Sofia’s room again, and know the details of my One Room Challenge Master Bedroom!

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

When styling any event I always mix lows and highs. Don’t wait until you finally host Thanksgiving or Christmas to bring out your good china, place settings, or silverware!  I love how my new Pottery Barn Rope Outdoor Dinnerware looks matched with my Homegoods costal dishes!

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

The napkins and multi-colored glassware are from Oh Joy Spring Collection along with the paper mini lanterns.  For the mimosa bar I had to bring out my Waterford champagne glasses, which adds a touch of fancy to any occasion!

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

After styling everything for brunch outside, I had to move everything inside due to the rain.  However, that didn’t stop us from having a good time.  We immediately started remincing about One Room Challenge and what room we are going to do for the next one! YES, we are THOSE girls!

As we ate my signature egg casserole dish, enjoyed biscuits and mini croissants with peach jam, fruit salad with mint, and sipped on peach or mango passion fruit mimosas, we had to talk about our latest design and DIY projects and of course the fun at Haven Conference that some of missed (including myself).

Brunch Sarah Sofia Productions

If you don’t know these women picture above you should. They are all talented in their own right!

Beth Barden, Design Post Interiors, is a Charlotte interior designer who I got to know through One Room Challenge! She makes it look easy juggling three kids and a full time business.  You will be impressed with her style and work, especially her recent work on the Home Depot Outdoor Games Style Challenge!

Ariene Bethea, Dress My Room Interiors, is a Charlotte interior designer, who has her own Etsy shop, and sells vintage home décor furnishings and accessories on One Kings Lane and Hunters Alley and  recently opened a booth at Slate Interiors. If that wasn’t enough Ariene launched her own handcrafted paperweight line and was thrilled to receive one of her pieces as a hostess gift!

Kim Loring, Legere Creativ, is another Charlotte interior designer who also has a booth at Slate Interiors and participate in One Room Challenge.  It was a pleasure meeting her for the first time and learning about her trade!

Mallory Fitzsimmons, Charming in Charlotte, is just as charming and stylish in person as she is on her life and style blog! Mallory shares her interior design, fashion and DIY inspiration on her blog with all her latest projects! We became fast friends through One Room Challenge and this girl did two rooms! If you missed  my post on my favorites from One Room Challenge, which includes Mallory, check it out here.

Summer Hogan, Simple Stylings, is one of those people you meet and you instantly connect and know you will be fast friends! Summer is an interior designer at hear like me and is always working on the next space in her home or design challenge.  Summer hosted some of us local Charlotte One Room Challenge participates on her finished deck, see details from my previous post here, and this group was formed! She is currently participating in Home Depot Outdoor Games Style Challenge and has some great design ideas!

Lory Cobb, Lory Cobb Interiors, is one of the first friends I made when moving back to Charlotte and has become a close friend.  Like me, she has two kids, and owns her own business, an interior design firm, here in Charlotte.  She is so creative and has been a great sounding board for me to bounce design ideas off of.  Not to mention Lory is usually my partner in crime going to furniture stores, flea markets, and High Point Market! One of my favorite design projects she did was of her daughter Hensley’s room with beautiful gold and blush stencil and trim work all around the room.

We missed Sarah (Matters of Style), Cheryl (Dwell by Cheryl) Bethany (Dwellings by DeVore), Jennifer (Pure and Simple Organizationing) and Converse (Converse Falcon Design).

A wine tasting party is a great way to get together with friends while enjoying and learning more about wine! It’s always a festive way to celebrate a Bride-To-Be for her bridal shower. Check out more details of this bridal shower wine tasting here.

What better way to host a wine tasting than to have an expert guide you through the wine selection and tasting.  Sam Ryburn Jr. was our sommelier aka wine expert for the night! Since this wine tasting was held in the summer, we choose patio wines.

Wine Tasting

We had 8 wines that were all reasonably priced and perfect for summer. Cremat Rose’, which is a dry sparking wine from France, outside the Champagne district and LaMarca Prosecco. a semi sweet sparkling wine with notes of peach and citrus were our two sparkling wines.  Rose wines go great with salads and light summer foods.

Our next two wines were Bila Haut white and Bila Haut Rose’.  A favorite of mine, which is also a good selection for weddings, is A to Z Pinot Noir from California, was compared to Belle Glos Pinot Noir from Oregon. North Star Merlot and Vin de Pays d’Oc Chardonnay rounded out our tasting.

The menu was tapas style with light appetizers including caprese skewers, applewood smoked bacon wrapped dates, sweet figs with walnuts and honey, watermelon and mint skewers, an artesian cheese plate, prosciutto, several different salami options, Palmetto cheese bites, grilled apple chicken sausage bites, and spanakopita.

Wine Tasting

The most fun for me besides drinking the wine, was the use of the colors from the food, to décor, to the flowers! I was so excited to finally use these vibrate colored lantern string of lights from Oh Joy’s collection! I also used some of her napkins from her spring collection.

Wine Tasting

I have been using this set of costal appetizer plates all spring and summer, and the wine tasting was another good reason to bring them out. Probably my favorite HomeGoods find of the season.  I absolutely love the way the wine tasting party looked at night with all the lights on the deck!

Wine Tasting

Just as the event was set up it down poured and was brought inside.  On to Plan B! However, the rain eventually stopped and cooled down the humid Carolina air, and guests were able to enjoy the festive deck under the lights.

Memorial Day Weekend: The Unoffical Welcome to Summer!

Summer

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us.  Time to celebrate those who fought for our freedom with family and friends.

While summer doesn’t offically begin until June 21, Memorial Day has become the unofficial start to the summer.  It’s been 90’s here in Charlotte and as we say bring on summer, patios, cocktails, and fun with family and friends!

I love using traditional patriotic colors, but also mixing it up with bright colors.  This tablescape from an event I hosted is the perfect combination of spring and summer colors.  You can’t go wrong with mixing and matching costal, pastels, and classic colors like blue and white.

Memorial Day Weekend Celebration

Everything is in bloom, so use what you have in your yard as a floral centerpiece. You could even add a flower to each place setting as a special touch.

Memorial Day Weekend

Guests were served shrimp cocktail with avocado and a cheese platter as starters. Then dined family style with grilled salmon, grilled squash, zucchini and bell peppers with roasted rosemary new potatoes.   Add fresh bread from your local bakery with a side of olive oil.

Memorial Day Weekend Celebration

One of my favorite and easy summer time desserts is homemade cookie ice cream sandwiches! Adults and kids a like love this one.  You can find the recipe here.  Another favorite is any berry or peach cobbler. You can find my healthy and light recipe here.

The grilled salmon recipe is a family favorite created by my father, Zuheir Sofia, and modified over the years.

Grilled Salmon Filet – Serves 5-6 People

Ingredients

2 lbs salmon filet

1/2 cup Marzetti’s light slaw dressing

1/3 cup of Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon dill

1/2 teaspoon dry or fresh rosemary

1 teaspoon dry or fresh chopped parsley

1/2 teaspoon dry oregano flakes

Pam Olive Oil Spray for grill

Wash filet in cold water. Pat dry. Check for occasional bones in filet. Mix slaw dressing, Dijon mustard, and spices in a small bowl.  Then spread the mixture over the top of the filet. (the skin goes on the bottom).  Put fish directly on outdoor grill, which has been slightly oiled.  Cook over a medium heat for 8-12 minutes until fish begins to flake.  Do not turn.  Skin should peel off easily when filet is removed from grill.  Divide into individual serving and serve immediately.

Wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day Weekend and start to the summer!
