Coffee Talk with Charlotte Interior Designers

Since spring is right around the corner, many of us start getting the itch to spruce up our home. Today I am having coffee talk with Charlotte interior designer Beth Barden,  designPost interiors, to get us inspired.

blog headshot 4 super exposed

I met Beth through One Room Challenge and love her eye for design! She is always designing spaces that are fresh, fun and functional. Since we both share the love for a good DIY project and entertaining Beth was a natural fit to be a guest on Sarah Sofia Productions.

If you’re local in Charlotte you must check out Style Session Live!

Coffee Talk With Charlotte Interior Designers

Q: What is Style Session Live?

A: Style Session Live is a way to connect more locally in Charlotte and to provide FREE design advice.  We don’t want decorating to be intimidating and taking 30 minutes to chat with you about your design dilemmas might just be the first step in helping you finally create a home you love!

Q: How did you start designPost interiors and find your style?

A: designPOST interiors grew from a hobby to a blog to doing work for friends and family and now fills my days with small to full-scale decorating projects!  I have always loved design, even as a child I used to rearrange my room on a weekly basis so I am so excited that I get to do it as a legitimate job now!  My style is influenced by everything from my love of the beach to my quest to find the best deals to my desire to make my home feel comfortable and welcoming.  When working with clients I love the challenge of trying to find the right balance of their style, my style, and a few unique pieces for each space.

Coffe Talk with designPOST Interiors || Sarah Sofia Productions

Q Beth: How did you get into interior design?
A: My love of design started basically as a child.  I have always cared about how my surroundings look and get a lot of joy in tweaking things to be just right.  I never thought of decorating as a career and so instead got a degree that I never really used.  It wasn’t until I started getting requests from friends to help them decorate that I really started considering it as a job.  Blogging also really helped turn my hobby into a business.  I made connections, documented my work and style and eventually started getting more and more referrals.  It has been a blast to watch everything grow!
Q: What’s your favorite design project to date?
A: My favorite design project…hmmm that’s hard because I get attached to every room but I really love this one playroom I designed.  We went with an unpredictable black and white color scheme and the room just feel so fun to me!
Coffee Talk with designPOST Interiors || Sarah Sofia Productions
I also have a few projects that are currently wrapping up that I can’t wait to get photographed!!
Q: What’s your worst design project or most challenging project to date?
A: I am probably my worst client, ha ha!  I have tried lots of different ideas in my own house and some have been total flops!  I’d rather try it out in my house than a paying clients so I guess it’s all good! That being said, after several design challenges with my living room I finally love the new and improved space in our home!
Coffee Talk With Design Post Interiors || Sarah Sofia Productions
Q: What and or who inspires you as a designer?
A: I am overwhelmed with inspiration on a daily basis just from other blogs and Pinterest alone.  I also find lots of inspiration from going to actual stores.  I love seeing how they display things and use different color combinations.  If I had to pick one designer though it would most definitely be Emily Henderson- love her!
Q: How can the average person design a space on a budget?
A: Designing on a budget has been the name of my game for a long time.  I have never had millions to spend and even if I did I am just a budget girl at heart.  I am convinced I can find a knock off of anything I want at HomeGoods, Target or TJ Maxx.  Designing a space on a budget is just about having an open mind, patience, and a little guts!

Mama’s Cranberry and Apple Dish: A Thanksgiving and Christmas Tradition

Last week I provided a Thanksgiving round up of home décor and tablescape!

Thanksgiving Inspiration

If you missed all the Thanksgiving inspiration you can check it out here.

Thanksgving Inspiration

After receiving rave reviews and requests for the recipe, I’m finally sharing a family favorite that started with my Southern grandmother: Mama’s Cranberry and Apple Dish.

Mamas Cranberry and Apple Dish

This dish is a Thanksgiving and Christmas tradition in our family.  It’s good with turkey anytime and will wow you’re guests!

Mama’s Cranberry & Apple Dish

Ingredients: Serves 6-8

  • 3 cups sliced, peeled gala apples
  • 2 cups raw cranberries
  • 3/4 cup sugar or Splenda
  • 1 stick melted butter
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar of Splenda brown sugar
  • 1 cup uncooked oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pecans

Put apples and cranberries in layers in a baking dish. Sprinkle sugar or Splenda on top. Melt the butter and mix with flour, brown sugar, oatmeal and pecans. Spread mixture over the top layer of apples and cranberries. Cook at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes. Serve immediately with turkey and sides.

Mama's Cranberry & Apple Dish

This recipe was first published in America Discovers Columbus, a collection of recipes for easy entertaining from The Junior League of Columbus, when my mother was cookbook chairman. It has come full circle as I’ve started my own family in Charlotte, NC, where my mother was born and raised, and I’m currently a member of Junior League of Charlotte.

Thanksgiving Inspiration

Hope this inspires you to start your own Thanksgiving and Christmas tradition!

Thanksgiving Inspiration: Get The Look For Less

Fall Entertaining 2011

Now that Halloween is over and we’re entering the second week of November I wanted to share some more fall and Thanksgiving inspiration with you.

Fall Entertaining 1 2011

Glamming up your pumpkins, gourds, and eggplants not only add color but dimension to your Thanksgiving décor. For the easy DIY tutorial check out here.

Fall Entertaining 2012

You’re Thanksgiving tablescape doesn’t have to be fancy or traditional to be festive and colorful! Adding décor pieces that you already own and mix and matching them with one or two new pieces work great. Get the details for this look here.

Festive Fall Decor Tablescape

Here’s another simple Thanksgiving tablescape that I shared with you to kick off fall! I love the pop of orange, yellow, and red against the blue and burlap. You can check out the details of this look here.

Don’t forget the front of your home is the first thing that will greet your guests.

p 1 Fall Decor

Get the look and details from my previous post here.

Pottery Barn is always a source of inspiration for me during the holidays. Get the look for less and in 15 minutes.

Thanksgiving Decor

First step is to use accessories you already own! Everything you see here is something I’ve pulled from different areas of our home.

Thanksgiving Decor & Tablescape

I absolutely love these black lanterns from Ikea! I usually have them displayed outside but brought the outside in for a rustic look. The faux sparkle pumpkin is one of my favorite buys from Michael’s, but you can easily do it yourself. This gold sea urchin was pulled from our master bedroom. Don’t have colorful table linens? Make your own. I bought this fabric from Hobby Lobby for an event and have used it several times since then.

Thanksgiving Decor & Tablescape

I’ve wanted to try pumpkin carved votive for a few years now and love how it turned out. All you need is a small pumpkin, knife, spoon, candle, and electric drill.

Thanksgiving Tabelscape

I was easy and took less than 10 minutes. Simply slice off the tops, carve a small hole, and scoop out the flesh & seeds of the pumpkin.

Thanksgiving Decor & Tablescape

I decided to use pumpkins again this year as place settings. Simply write the name on the pumpkin with chalk paint or permanent maker.

Thanksgiving Decor & Tablescape

You can easily turn this pumpkin into a DIY decorating craft for kids to keep them occupied during dinner. Simply add fun stickers to the table.

Did you catch Mama’s Cranberry and Apple Dish, that will WOW your guests?

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Sofia The First Birthday Party

My Sofia the First started getting into Sofia the First Disney Princess right after her second birthday.  We have the book, her princess gowns and accessories, the movies and shows.  It was only fitting that I start planning her 3rd birthday after her new favorite character!

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Instead of your traditional princess party, I made it into a princess and prince party, which allowed us to include all of Sofia’s close friends.

Sofia The First Invitation

Below is the set up outside for Sofia’s Royal Guests! We set the table with Sofia The First dinnerware and fine linen and added a castle tent that resembled an outdoor scene in Sofia The First.  While the main color is purple in Sofia the First’s gown, my Sofia the First loves the color pink and I wanted to incorporate that in the event design.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

We also had a colorful bounce house castle that kept Sofia’s royal guests bouncing with joy through the party!

Sofia The First Birthday Party Sofia The First Birthday Party

It wouldn’t be a royal celebration without princess tiaras and prince crowns! We set up a arts and craft table on the deck for the kids to decorate their favorite princess tiara, prince crown, sword or shield.

Sofia The First Birthday Party 4

For Sofia’s Royal Menu we served some of her favorites such as Crown PB&J, Fairy Sushi aka turkey rolls, Prince BBQ Sliders, Fruit Wands, Sparkling Pink Lemonade, Fairy Tale Cupcakes, and Castle Cookies.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

In keeping with the pink and purple theme,  I wanted the buffet table to be whimsical and not too fancy or grown up.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

A delicate light rose floral arrangement on top of a gold and crystal stand served as our centerpiece flanked by fairy wand arrangements.  I had started to make topiary arrangements, but the fairy wand felt more whimsical and kept with our princess theme.  Purple tulle with sparkles was used for the tutu effect on the edge of the table and pink tulle draped over the white linen.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Other décor items came from Sofia’s toy collection with Sofia The First figurine dolls, Sofia the first accessories like the princess shoes pair of gloves, and magic wand. I found the festive fairy wands at Target months ago and used them as part of the display and party favors for Sofia’s royal guests.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

You can’t have enough pink! Pink garland was hung above the main food buffet and outside on the deck.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

Pink pom poms were hung over the drink and appetizer station.

Sofia The First Birthday Party

From the looks of things the Fairy Tale Cupcakes were by far the favorite item!

Sofia the First 3rd Birthday Party

It was a fun party to plan and even more fun being a part of the celebration!

The Thrill of the Hunt Summer Series: Sarah’s Treasures!

Front Entryway Sarah Sofia Productions

Today marks the last post in a summer series on “the thrill of the hunt” AKA finding that one piece of furniture or item for your home or event your hosting.  The summer series featured guest posts from professionals in the interior design, estate sales, professional organizing and event industries.  My guests included Jennifer Burnham, Pure and Simple Organizing, and Cheryl Luckett, Dwell by Cheryl.  You can view their “treasure hunting” tips here and here. Make sure you follow both of these talented women on Instagram and Twitter!

What makes something a treasure? It’s what ever accessory, piece of furniture, décor item that you value or that you like!  Often times you may see the value in something that someone else might not.

As a wedding and event planner, I’m always using different pieces to decorate and style an event. These pieces may also be part of my home décor.  I hit up garage sales, yard sales, Charlotte Market Place’s Vintage Charlotte Pop Up Flea Market, Metrolina ReStores, HomeGoods, Southern Marketplace, Sleepy Poet Antique Mall and Catawba River Antique Mall to name a few.

Just like my two guests, Pure and Simple Organizing and Dwell by Cheryl, I enjoy a good deal and making that “treasure” fit my home or event décor.  It’s fun when I can kill two birds with one stone. Like these two bunnies I found at Catawba River Antique Mall for my Easter décor, which was featured in Easter Celebrations.

Easter Bunnies

My home décor is full of blue and white and I was thrilled to find these plates, tea pot, and containers, which have all found homes in my kitchen and living room, at a local yard sale.  I still can’t get over scoring all of the below finds for a total of $14.25!

The Thrill of the Hunt

I had been looking for an arm chair for my mater bedroom during One Room Challenge last spring and of course found this beauty a few months later for a whopping 25 cents! The chair is currently in my family room and waiting for a little TLC reupholster make over. I would love to do something like this to it in the below right photo!

Thrill of the Hunt

I hung my blue and white plates from the yard with my three other plates I purchased from Lance Jackson with Parker Kennedy Living, on the kitchen wall.  It’s add the perfect dimension and depth I was looking for to complete the kitchen updates without breaking the bank.

Thrill of The Hunt

I scored this white porcelain Royal Haeger pitcher and basin for 25 cents at the yard sale! Yes, that’s right $0.25 for both, which could run you $40-$60.  It completes the vintage look in my front entryway and looks great styled with hydrangeas as seen below from my Front Entryway post.

Front Entray Way

Another favorite from my treasure hunts is a beautiful miniature pitcher from Modern Cottage’s booth at Vintage Charlotte! It’s currently in my kitchen and is a great place to display small flower arrangements or herbs like basil.  I also found these vintage metal spike flower frogs and stand at a vintage Parisian booth! All three finds look great in my kitchen.

Thrill of the Hunt

Let’s not forget all the Lilly Pulitzer I found at the Metrolina ReStores in Charlotte!  So excited that one of my friends scored this white ottoman to store her shoe collection after one of my recent posts!

The Thrill of the Hunt

I had a hard time walking away from these Lilly Pulizer elephant garden stools, especially since I already have one elephant stool in my home.

The Thrill of the Hunt

My last major treasure from this summer was this campaign three drawer piece from Habitat Metrolina ReStores.  I’ve been slowly transforming the former dinning room into my office since we moving into our house a year and half ago.  We are in desperate need of storage, especially for our files and this piece is a perfect fit.  The cell phone photo is grainy, but you can see it has good bones.

The Thrill of the Hunt

I started spray painting this bad boy white and it just doesn’t look right.  Back to the drawing board and rethinking the color and paint.  Chalk paint might be interesting or going bold with coral to match with the color scheme of mint and coral with mainly white furniture and pops of green in my office.  Stay tuned!

I hope you have enjoyed my summer series and have learned a thing or two about a long the way.  Who knows, maybe your next big score is just around the corner!

Wine Tasting Party: Summer Patio Wines

Sarah Sofia Productions

Sarah Sofia Productions

A wine tasting party is a great way to get together with friends while enjoying and learning more about wine! It’s always a festive way to celebrate a Bride-To-Be for her bridal shower. Check out more details of this bridal shower wine tasting here.

What better way to host a wine tasting than to have an expert guide you through the wine selection and tasting.  Sam Ryburn Jr. was our sommelier aka wine expert for the night! Since this wine tasting was held in the summer, we choose patio wines.

Wine Tasting

We had 8 wines that were all reasonably priced and perfect for summer. Cremat Rose’, which is a dry sparking wine from France, outside the Champagne district and LaMarca Prosecco. a semi sweet sparkling wine with notes of peach and citrus were our two sparkling wines.  Rose wines go great with salads and light summer foods.

Sarah Sofia Productions

Sarah Sofia Productions

Our next two wines were Bila Haut white and Bila Haut Rose’.  A favorite of mine, which is also a good selection for weddings, is A to Z Pinot Noir from California, was compared to Belle Glos Pinot Noir from Oregon. North Star Merlot and Vin de Pays d’Oc Chardonnay rounded out our tasting.

The menu was tapas style with light appetizers including caprese skewers, applewood smoked bacon wrapped dates, sweet figs with walnuts and honey, watermelon and mint skewers, an artesian cheese plate, prosciutto, several different salami options, Palmetto cheese bites, grilled apple chicken sausage bites, and spanakopita.

Wine Tasting

The most fun for me besides drinking the wine, was the use of the colors from the food, to décor, to the flowers! I was so excited to finally use these vibrate colored lantern string of lights from Oh Joy’s collection! I also used some of her napkins from her spring collection.

Wine Tasting

I have been using this set of costal appetizer plates all spring and summer, and the wine tasting was another good reason to bring them out. Probably my favorite HomeGoods find of the season.  I absolutely love the way the wine tasting party looked at night with all the lights on the deck!

Wine Tasting

Just as the event was set up it down poured and was brought inside.  On to Plan B! However, the rain eventually stopped and cooled down the humid Carolina air, and guests were able to enjoy the festive deck under the lights.
