Wine Tasting Party: Summer Patio Wines

Sarah Sofia Productions

Sarah Sofia Productions

A wine tasting party is a great way to get together with friends while enjoying and learning more about wine! It’s always a festive way to celebrate a Bride-To-Be for her bridal shower. Check out more details of this bridal shower wine tasting here.

What better way to host a wine tasting than to have an expert guide you through the wine selection and tasting.  Sam Ryburn Jr. was our sommelier aka wine expert for the night! Since this wine tasting was held in the summer, we choose patio wines.

Wine Tasting

We had 8 wines that were all reasonably priced and perfect for summer. Cremat Rose’, which is a dry sparking wine from France, outside the Champagne district and LaMarca Prosecco. a semi sweet sparkling wine with notes of peach and citrus were our two sparkling wines.  Rose wines go great with salads and light summer foods.

Our next two wines were Bila Haut white and Bila Haut Rose’.  A favorite of mine, which is also a good selection for weddings, is A to Z Pinot Noir from California, was compared to Belle Glos Pinot Noir from Oregon. North Star Merlot and Vin de Pays d’Oc Chardonnay rounded out our tasting.

The menu was tapas style with light appetizers including caprese skewers, applewood smoked bacon wrapped dates, sweet figs with walnuts and honey, watermelon and mint skewers, an artesian cheese plate, prosciutto, several different salami options, Palmetto cheese bites, grilled apple chicken sausage bites, and spanakopita.

Wine Tasting

The most fun for me besides drinking the wine, was the use of the colors from the food, to décor, to the flowers! I was so excited to finally use these vibrate colored lantern string of lights from Oh Joy’s collection! I also used some of her napkins from her spring collection.

Wine Tasting

I have been using this set of costal appetizer plates all spring and summer, and the wine tasting was another good reason to bring them out. Probably my favorite HomeGoods find of the season.  I absolutely love the way the wine tasting party looked at night with all the lights on the deck!

Wine Tasting

Just as the event was set up it down poured and was brought inside.  On to Plan B! However, the rain eventually stopped and cooled down the humid Carolina air, and guests were able to enjoy the festive deck under the lights.

Pink + Gold GLAM Bridal Shower

IMG_8457

I have always wanted to design and style a glam bridal shower and finally had the opportunity when Pasha Davis with Bridal Flavors and Mekeda Dempsey with Queen’s Sweets asked me to team up with them for this photo shoot!

The collaborative look was created by pulling together stationery, party supplies, delicious and glamorous sweets, linens, and a few of my favorite DIY projects.

Inspiration for this Pink + Gold GLAM bridal shower began with a little glitter and sequins.  Pink and gold are becoming a hot trend for 2014 and was the perfect fit for this GLAM themed bridal shower! Add a splash of sparkle and a pinch of glitter and you have yourself a glamorous party that all your guests will remember.

GLAM is all in the details! From the invitation and place cards by Bridal Flavors, to the linens, chairs, and place settings by Party Reflections, to the floral arrangement by The Place for Flowers, you will see the different shades of pink and gold.  Don’t forget about the pop of sparkle from the pink and gold glitter cake pops and mini whoopie pies by Queen’s Sweets.

My favorite design of this photo shoot was making the gold and pink glitter champagne bottle! I started out trying to make straight lines and alternating between gold and different shades of pink.  However, I decided half way through that it looked more unique to have the colors blend together.

I used hot pink ribbon with glitter to make napkin holders and gold sequins ribbon for ties on the hot pink polka dot straws, which added a punch of color, glam and glitter!

Adding the gold candles accented in gold glitter and the gold votive candle holders glammed up the pink tablescape and gave it the right amount of sparkle!

I have to applaud Christopher Bollinger with Bollinger Images for bringing this GLAM photo shoot to life in all the photographs.  I hope you enjoy this photo shoot as much as we enjoyed working on it!

Elizabeth & Ryan Tying The Knot 10.29.11

As a wedding and event planner it was such a pleasure to style and design “Tying the Knot” bridal shower for Elizabeth.

Inspiration for this bridal shower began with the theme “Tying the Knot”, which was reflected throughout the design of the event.  For example, the flower arrangements had flowers that were in the shape of hearts or were tied.  Another example is in the wooden plaques such as Bride and Love.

In addition to the primary “Tying the Knot” theme we used the word game scrabble.  The Bride-to-Be enjoys playing a word game similar to scrabble on her iPhone and we carried that theme throughout the event design in the scrabble pieces on the tables and again in the wooden plaques.  Our color palette included shades of purple, red, orange, and grey, which are Elizabeth’s wedding colors, and were used in the flower arrangements, decorations, and food.

The bridal shower was held outside on a private patio.  We wanted the atmosphere to be warm and inviting, yet have a fun and modern vibe like the Bride-to-Be.  Vignettes were set up throughout the patio including a main food table, drink bar, dessert bar, seating area, and gift station.

The menu consisted of mini lunch dishes such as quiche, chicken salad on croissants, shrimp shooters, prosciutto and melon skewers, turkey rolls, brie with heart cut out filled with jam, and Crudite’s (vegetables tucked in tiny glasses).  The Dessert bar featured red velvet cake pops with purple icing, ultra-violet vanilla cupcakes, and chocolate cups filled with fruit and chocolate straws.  Playing on the Bride-to-Be’s color scheme we went with a festive drink bar with Bellini’s, Mimosa’s, and Sangria.  Mason jars were used to serve the cocktails and mini mason jars were filled with purple and orange jelly beans as party favors.

A Wine Tasting & Tapas Themed Bridal Shower

A wine tasting and tapas bridal shower or bachelorette party is a perfect theme for a bride who enjoys wine and doesn’t like to be the center of attention.  This is a fun party that allows guests to mix and mingle and learn a little about wine.  You can host this party in your home, at a wine cellar, a winery, or if the weather is nice outside in someone’s backyard or patio.

You should plan to serve two whites and two reds and depending on the bride’s preferences one to two sparkling wine(s) or champagne(s), 3 bottles of each (12-18 bottles total).   You should offer one sweet and one dry white wine such as a Riesling and a Chardonnay and a lighter and full-bodied red wine such as a Pinot Noir and Cabernet.

For this bridal shower we had several kinds of cheese to pair with the wines such as Cheddar, Gouda, Brie, Gruyère, and Goat and an assortment of crackers.  We also served fruit, which is a great compliment to wine, such as green and red grapes and pears (rub lemon over top to help prevent them turning brown).  Other tapas included tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella ball skewers, heart-shaped smoked salmon squares, spanakopita, humus and veggies, crab dip, and of course a little something sweet with macaroons from Pistacia Vera.

Don’t forget to personalize the wine and tapas tasting with such elements as wine glasses (shown below) with the bride and groom’s wedding date for guests to use and take home as a gift.   Make wine cards for each wine that include the type of wine, vineyard, the year, and a brief description.  Use accents such as flowers, liens, candles, and paper lanterns to make the party pop with the bride’s wedding colors!  Left over wine and wine glasses are perfect gifts to give to the bride.
