One Room Challenge Week 6: Big Girl Room Reveal

ORC logo

It’s week 6 in the race to the finish line in One Room Challenge (ORC) , created by Linda from Calling it Home, who is an extremely talented and creative designer.  That means today is the BIG REVEAL of Operation BIG GIRL ROOM along with my fellow 90+ participants!

Big Girl Room

What’s the big prize for participating in ORC? A finished room in 6 weeks and the opportunity to participate and share the experience of completing a room with talented designers and others that enjoy interior design! Yes, that’s right no money or honorary first place.

Sofia's Big Girl Room

If you’re just joining the ORC fun you can get caught up on Operation Big Girl Room here:

The moment you have all been waiting for…Sofia’s big girl room!

Big Girl Room

Big Girl Room

This distressed vintage dresser in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is my favorite piece of furniture in Sofia’s room and perhaps in our home! I love the detailing and the antique mirror.

Big Girl Room

Sofia is no longer 3 months, and it was time to replace the baby photo in the “giggle” picture frame with a current one of Sofia and her sister Charlotte. The DIY jewelry box adds the big girl and princess element to the dresser.

The silver bird bookends and wooden Sofia plaque have been great accessories that have transitioned her room from nursery to big girl room.

Big Girl Room

I made subtly changes to the reading nook such as adding some glam and pop of color with the floral arrangement.  I updated the photo to one from our apple picking adventure this fall.  Sofia loves looking at it and remembering the fun filled day! I love using unique storage baskets such as the pink and white polka dot tin pail for her music instruments.

Big Girl Room

Here’s the end result of the canopy aka “castle” that Sofia requested, her updated day bed, and the beautiful shell chandelier.

Big Girl Room

1996

Mix and matching new and old bedding items made the transition from little girl to big girl without breaking the budget and having to make a major decision on all new bedding at this point. I hope to have a decision and more updates this spring so check back!

Big Girl Room

Big Girl Room

Sofia wanted a castle and a princess like room and this princess castle from Amazon.com did not disappoint! The shimmery chandelier from Hobby Lobby was a hit!

Big Girl RoomWe moved this play kitchen by Kitchen Kraft from the family room into Sofia’s room in late August but needed to update the wall. I love how the wall art from Hobby Lobby works in her room next to the DIY memory board of Sofia’s treasures and favorite things!

Big Girl Room

Last but not least is the gallery wall with the cherry blossom and bird painting that inspired the look for Sofia’s nursery, her first birthday party, and now has transitioned the look to big girl room!

2011 2013

Big Girl Room Big Girl RoomBig Girl RoomThere are so many fun personal touches on this wall like my childhood books displayed with the bird cage, Sofia’s art work displayed with new bird clip hooks and an updated photo from the first day of preschool as a three year old!

I had to display her recent master piece, Starry Night, which is one of my favorite paintings by Vincent Van Gough!

Big Girl Room 1987 1988

I love how my HomeGoods pink and coral baskets look in this white bookcase, which was mine as a child and repainted by my mother. Clean up at night has been a lot easier now that we have plenty of storage.

Last but not least is the transformation of a once boring closet to a fun secret hide out fit for a princess!

Big Girl Room Closet

The DIY pink and green tower shelf use to be displayed in Sofia’s room. You can find the DIY tutorial here along with DIY tutorial for the fabric letters above her bed. It works great in her closet to display all her dress up accessories.

Big Girl Room ClosetThe pink and green designer hardware I found at Hobby Lobby.  They’re the perfect feminine touch to hang her princess dresses.

Big Girl Room Closet

I upcycled this 6 drawer whicker piece that I purchased years ago from Pier 1 Imports. Nothing a little pink and antique gold spray paint can’t fix to add some GLAM for this princess retreat! It serves as additional toy storage and displays her art work.

Big Girl Room Closet

The once cramped shelf now displays some of her stuffed animals and boxes with arts and craft supplies.

The blue and green trays were a Target dollar store find, which add a pop of color. I love how the quatrefoil stencil turned out in my daughter Charlotte’s bedroom but decided to use this turquoise removable contact paper for the accent wall.

Every princess needs a mirror at her height and a place to hang all her purses!

Most importantly, my client loved her big girl room and closet reveal SO MUCH she wanted more surprises!

Big Girl RoomThank you for all your kind words and encouragement through this process! Make sure you come back and check out my full source list and additional behind the scene footage next week!

Please make sure you check out the 20 professional designers who revealed their stunning transformations yesterday here and the 90 + participants sharing the reveals today here.

I leave you with one last image of this gorgeous shell chandelier that ignited my inspiration for Sofia’s big girl room.

  1. You absolutely thought of everything! All the little play area vignettes in one well thought out darling space! I especially loved that you incorporated meaningful, memorable photos and her personal artwork into the space. I can only imagine how excited she must be to show all who visit her big girl room that mom so lovingly created. Well done friend!

  2. Awww! I love it so much, and obviously she does too. All the beautiful pink and blue, and that canopy…seems like she and I have alot of the same design preferences, and both want to be princesses. Only it’s okay for her to…she’s not a 30 something old woman. #awkward Seriously though, you’ve put so much love and effort in this room, and it is beautiful. Congrats! xo

    • Celine thank you so much for your kind words! HA, yes now that you mention it we should all get together for a “princess” party under your canopy! You’re too sweet and that means a lot coming from someone with such an eye for design! XOXO

  3. Wow, Sarah your daughters bedroom is precious!! I really love the chic chandy and the glazed dresser is beautiful. Great job. I’ve been following you on Instagram, so it’s fun to see the space all pulled together!

  4. This is so cute, Sarah! I love your client’s expression of the room too 🙂 I’m sure she will have blast playing with those cute dress-up clothes too. Great job and congrats on finishing the challenge!!

  5. WOW!!! I love every little detail of this room! That light fixture really sends it over the top. She’s one lucky little lady! 🙂

  6. My daughter would love this space! You did such a beautiful job 🙂 I am sure she LOVES her new room, what a special treat. Nice work, such fun working through the ORC w/ you! XOXO, Amy

    • Delia, thank you so much! Oh, I bet both turned out fab! I did our master bedroom last ORC and finally finished my daughter’s bedroom before the other one needs an update. 🙂 Cheers on a job well done my ORC friend!
